Ngorongoro Crater – Africa’s Eden
Imagine standing on the rim of a vast volcanic crater, looking out over a lush green valley teeming with wildlife. Below you roam elephants, lions, zebras, and even rhinos—all in one breathtaking view. This is Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most unique safari destinations in the world and a true crown jewel of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit.
At Royal Climb and Safaris, we believe no trip to Tanzania is complete without visiting this natural wonder.
What is Ngorongoro Crater?
Over two million years ago, a giant volcano erupted and collapsed in on itself, forming the world’s largest unbroken caldera. Today, Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most concentrated wildlife areas.
- Location: About 3 hours from Arusha, near Karatu town
- Size: The crater floor covers 260 square kilometers (about 100 square miles)
- Depth: Roughly 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep
The result? A self-contained ecosystem rich in wildlife, water, and beauty.
Wildlife in the Crater
Ngorongoro is often called “Africa’s Garden of Eden” because of the incredible concentration of animals within the crater. On a single game drive, it’s possible to see:
- Lions (some of the highest densities in Africa)
- Elephants (often older bulls with huge tusks)
- Buffaloes
- Wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles in large herds
- Hippos wallowing in the wetlands
- Black rhinos – rare and protected, but occasionally seen from a distance
- Hyenas, jackals, and serval cats
- Over 500 bird species, including flamingos, ostriches, and crowned cranes
Because the crater walls act as a natural enclosure, wildlife stays within reach year-round—making it one of the most reliable game-viewing spots in Africa.
Landscapes Within the Crater
You’ll be amazed by how many different habitats fit inside the crater:
- Lerai Forest – A beautiful yellow-barked acacia forest where elephants and leopards are sometimes seen
- Lake Magadi – A shallow soda lake that attracts flamingos and other water birds
- Gorigor Swamp – A wetland area loved by hippos and elephants
- Open Grasslands – Perfect for spotting lions hunting prey
- Crater Walls – Lush with montane forest and scenic viewpoints
It’s like a mini Serengeti wrapped inside a bowl of ancient rock.
What to Expect on a Safari
Your Ngorongoro Crater safari with Royal Climb and Safaris typically starts early in the morning. We descend the steep crater walls in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, guided by one of our expert local guides.
Inside, the roads wind through grasslands and forest, with wildlife waiting around almost every corner. There are designated picnic sites near the hippo pool where you’ll enjoy a scenic lunch before continuing your drive.
Safari inside the crater is regulated to preserve the ecosystem, so only a limited number of vehicles are allowed per day—making for a more peaceful and respectful experience.
Where to Stay
You can’t sleep inside the crater itself (it’s a protected area), but nearby lodges and camps offer spectacular views from the rim or just outside the conservation area:
- Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge – Perched on the rim with panoramic views
- Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge – Sunset views and luxury comfort
- Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp – Glamping in style, close to the crater gate
- Budget options in Karatu – For travelers seeking value and convenience
We help our guests choose the right accommodation based on budget and travel style.
Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round destination, with consistent wildlife sightings every season.
- June to October: Dry season, best for wildlife visibility
- November to May: Green season, fewer tourists and beautiful scenery
- March to April: Expect some rain, but also fewer crowds
Due to its altitude (2,200+ meters), the crater is cooler than the plains—so bring a jacket, even in the dry season!
