What to Take on Safari

When packing for an African safari, moderation is key. While there is no need to go minimalist, you also don’t want to carry an abundance of unnecessary luggage. Remember, on safari, travelers will often move with their luggage in the safari vehicle throughout the tour. On days when you’re staying at the same hotel or lodge, your bags will remain in your room. Carrying too much luggage could be inconvenient or even hinder your wildlife viewing experience. Based on years of experience leading exceptional safaris, we’ve created this packing list to help you pack just the right items (but not too many!) for your incredible Tanzanian safari: The Ultimate Safari Packing List You’ll spend a great deal of time in the safari vehicle viewing wildlife. However, you may also participate in walking safaris or cultural tours, so it’s essential to have practical, comfortable, and sturdy walking shoes. Please leave high heels, fashion sneakers, and platform shoes for other occasions. Tanzania’s weather varies depending on altitude and time of day, so it’s wise to bring layers, especially for the early mornings and late nights when it gets cooler. Safari Packing List: Most travelers on safari wear neutral-colored clothing like khaki and avoid bright whites or fluorescent colors. The reason is twofold: neutral tones blend in with nature, making wildlife viewing easier, and khaki-colored items are less likely to show dust, which is common in many safari areas. What Medications Should You Take on Safari? Each Royal Climb and Safaris vehicle is stocked with a basic first-aid kit, but if you take prescription medications or have special needs, be sure to bring your necessary meds with you. Recommended medications include: It’s also advised to bring insect repellent, as mosquitoes are generally active in the early morning and evening when you’re likely back at your lodge. Alternatively, wearing long-sleeved shirts can help deter mosquitoes. Don’t forget sunscreen! The equatorial sun in Tanzania is intense, especially at higher elevations such as Ngorongoro. Use sunscreen with SPF 40 or higher for adequate protection. Other Important Tips Most lodges and hotels affiliated with Royal Climb and Safaris provide full room and board, meaning three full meals a day. However, safaris tend to build up an appetite due to the excitement and fresh air. Consider packing: Some fresh fruits (like bananas) or nuts (such as cashews and peanuts) can also be purchased locally as you pass through Tanzanian villages. Necessary Items Even if the forecast doesn’t predict much sun, don’t leave your protective glasses at home. They’ll help shield your eyes from the wind, dust, and small insects when you pop out of the window or the open roof of the safari vehicle. Here’s a list of other recommended items: No need to bring binoculars! Each Royal Climb and Safaris vehicle is equipped with a pair for your convenience. There are also charging stations in the vehicles, so your devices will never lose power during your safari. If you have any questions about what to pack, feel free to contact us! We are happy to assist.

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the preferred arrival airport for safari-goers and Kilimanjaro trekkers. Located just 40 minutes from Moshi town or 50 minutes from Arusha, this is the ideal international airport for those with Northern-circuit safaris or planned mountain treks. What is JRO like?Kilimanjaro International Airport is still growing, while offering modern amenities. Restaurant and CafeThere is a restaurant and lounge area, as well as a cafe on the second floor, for travelers to relax or grab a quick bite before their flight. The airport offers modern toilets and a few souvenir shops, including your last option for purchasing Tanzanite before you fly. Currency Exchange There is a currency exchange desk so you can either change some notes into Tanzanian Shillings as soon as you arrive, or you can conveniently change back any remaining cash before flying home. Immigration You can receive a tourist visa upon arrival at JRO. Please come prepared with US dollars ($50 or $100, depending on your country of citizenship), as other currencies are not recommended. However, we suggest organizing your visa online before you travel to save time. Waiting in line at immigration after a long flight can be exhausting. Please see the official Tanzania Immigration webpage for the e-visa option. The e-visa allows travelers to access the “Passport and Visa holders” line at immigration upon arrival, speeding up the process so you can start your holiday sooner. WiFi The airport advertises free WiFi for waiting passengers, but please don’t rely on it! Some guests have passed through JRO when the internet was down, so be prepared for no internet or use your phone’s data instead. Transportation As soon as travelers step outside the arrival doors of JRO, they are sure to be greeted by friendly and eager taxi drivers. Royal Climb and Safaris guests are always picked up by our professional drivers, who usually bear a large signboard with your name to make it easy to find them. This service is included in our Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing and safari packages. We use clean and comfortable Toyota Alphard vehicles, spacious enough for your group and all your luggage. Simply share your flight arrival time with us, and we will communicate with you regarding your pick-up. This service is available 24 hours a day, no matter when your flight arrives in Tanzania. What to Expect When your flight arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be directed to collect your hand luggage and descend a set of stairs to the tarmac. Throughout East Africa, most airports do not have ramps for passengers to exit directly into the terminal. Instead, a stairway on wheels will be attached to the airplane exits, and you will disembark outdoors, a few hundred meters from the airport building. If you need assistance with your luggage, flight attendants will be happy to help. After disembarking, you and the other passengers will proceed to Immigration. If you have already secured an e-visa, present the printed page to the officers and join the “Visa Holder” line. Next, you may collect your checked baggage at the terminal immediately after immigration. Customs officers may request to inspect your bags, but they are usually checking for contraband or bulk products. If you are carrying standard items for a safari or trek, they will likely wave you through with a smile. Once you are through customs, head to the arrivals area outside the airport. Look for your Royal Climb and Safaris driver, who will help you with your luggage and escort you to a comfortable vehicle. Many Royal Climb and Safaris guests choose to stay at our nearby Moshi or Arusha Hotel, which is just a 40-minute drive from Kilimanjaro Airport. It is the perfect option for travelers arriving late at night or those who need rest before starting a safari or trek the next day. How far is Kilimanjaro Airport from Arusha?JRO is approximately 50 kilometers, or 30 miles, from Arusha town. How far is Kilimanjaro Airport from Moshi?JRO is approximately 42 kilometers, or 26 miles, from Moshi town. Travel time depends on traffic, but there is a smooth highway connecting both towns to the airport, and delays are uncommon. Hotels near Kilimanjaro AirportThere are several hotels near Kilimanjaro Airport, though many are basic 2-star accommodations, offering just bed and breakfast services for travelers departing the next day. These hotels are usually located near the highway and may lack scenic views or additional amenities. Guests may also choose to stay in Moshi or Arusha before their departing flight, but this might involve extra transport costs for reaching the airport. Other International Airports in Tanzania While JRO is not the only international airport in Tanzania, it’s the best option for travelers heading to the Northern Circuit or climbing Kilimanjaro. Here’s why: Julius Nyerere International Airport Located in Dar es Salaam, this airport is not ideal for visitors planning a safari or mountain trek. It is a 12-hour drive from Dar to Moshi or Arusha. Some guests choose to take a local flight from Dar to JRO to avoid this long journey, while others book flights directly into JRO to save time and hassle. Additionally, Dar es Salaam’s traffic can be quite congested, so travelers should account for delays when traveling to the airport. However, some guests who end their safari with a beach vacation in Zanzibar or Mafia Island may prefer to fly out of Dar, as it is closer to those destinations. Zanzibar International Airport This airport is located on the Zanzibar Archipelago. Some travelers book outbound flights from here if they end their holiday with a beach stay in Zanzibar. However, the number of international flights from Zanzibar is limited. Most guests find it easier and cheaper to take a charter flight from Zanzibar to JRO and then fly out from Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro International Airport JRO is located just 40 minutes from Moshi and 50 minutes from Arusha, making it the most convenient airport for safaris in northern Tanzania and treks

What to Expect on a Safari in Tanzania

Safari SafariA journey to Tanzania Africa has a special magic—sunsets so beautiful that time stands still, remote locations where the brilliance of the night stars truly takes your breath away, and encounters with nature that will change how you see the world. The best and most interesting way to experience nature in Africa is on a wildlife safari, which allows visitors to get close to wild animals in their natural habitat, all while supporting national environmental conservation efforts in the form of protected areas or national parks. And of all the African nations to choose from, make Tanzania your top safari destination. A safari in Tanzania is so much more than a vacation; it is a travel experience that will make you fall in love with nature and embrace the beauty of the wild in a completely new way. Tanzania is where Jane Goodall fell in love with chimpanzees. Her experience at Gombe National Park not only changed her life but motivated her to change the world! Tanzania is where Louis and Mary Leakey discovered one of the most important archeological finds on earth—at Olduvai Gorge, which continues to be carefully excavated to this day. Tanzania has inspired artists and writers for centuries, including Ernest Hemingway, with his famous book “The Snows of Kilimanjaro.” What is a Safari? What is a safari and what makes it different from a typical vacation? The word safari comes from the Swahili language, meaning ‘a journey’ and is the root of the verb ‘to travel’ in this East African language. Tanzania is by far the best country in Africa to go on a safari—it boasts the largest national parks, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as the highest mountain in Africa. As further testament to Tanzania’s claim as the top country in Africa for a safari, Serengeti National Park has been awarded the ‘Best Safari Destination’ out of numerous national parks across Africa by the pundits for multiple years in a row. Hence, a safari is not just a vacation, but a travel experience in Africa. While other places (such as Thailand or India) may advertise ‘safaris,’ these game drives to view animals are not comparable to an African safari, nor do they have any historical connection to this Swahili word. Need even more reasons to choose Tanzania as your safari destination? A safari in Tanzania National Park means: What is a game drive? By nature, safaris usually mean lengthy game drives. Guests can expect to spend anywhere from 6-8 hours in a safari car for animal viewing, especially in parks where they may not be permitted to exit the vehicle except in designated areas. Because of this, some guests opt to leave for a sunrise game drive, departing early in the morning with the hopes of viewing elusive animals—such as cheetahs—and returning to the lodge or hotel earlier in the day to enjoy a swim in the pool or a leisurely hike before evening. There is no rule that says you have to stay in the park until closing time. The hours of national parks are 6 am – 6 pm, and you are welcome to come and go anytime between these hours. Of course, it is not necessary to spend all day game-driving in the car. Most hotels are located right amidst the national parks, and taking a longer safari itinerary will allow you to enjoy the comforts of award-winning properties the whole day. Water hotels drilled around the lodge will attract the animals directly to the terrace, bringing safari vibes right to you. Because of the long time spent within a safari car, give consideration to traveling with young children. Keep in mind if your young one can sit for long periods and how attentive they may be to this experience. Safaris are exciting, and there are animals, birds, and unique wildlife to see all around, but it can be tiresome for young travelers. Also, remember that time moves differently on safari. A morning spent in Tarangire National Park following a herd of elephants is thrilling; your heart will race when you see a lion just a few meters away; you will stand up to fully appreciate the height of a giraffe and climb through the safari car to get a perfect photograph of a leopard hiding in a tree overhead. Before you know it, it’s time for lunch; your driver will take you to a specially designated picnic spot, usually overlooking a lake or with a fantastic view of the park, where you will enjoy your meal outside of the safari car. Things that make a safari in Tanzania special Animals Tanzania has the largest biodiversity of animals in Africa, making it hands-down the best location for a wildlife safari. Considering even just Tanzania’s northern parks and attractions, it is easy to see why Tanzania is a popular tourist destination for wildlife safaris: Scenery and Environment Within Africa, Tanzania is one of the leading countries to set aside large land areas for conservation or wildlife protection. Over a quarter (25%) of the nation has been designated either national parks or official conservation areas. This means there are vast areas of land that have stayed true to the integrity of nature, remote areas where nature reigns; such as the famous Great Migration with millions of wildebeests charging over the Grumeti River, risking crocodiles and other predators, savannahs where lions are still king, and all nature respects the mighty elephant. In Tanzania, visitors can truly see nature at its finest, untouched state, away from human habitat. Photographers of all walks—professionals and amateurs alike—continually choose Tanzania for amazing nature photographs. Capture photos of African plains that seem to stretch on forever, get an up-close shot of brilliant weaver birds constructing their nests in a thorny acacia tree, or some of Africa’s famous big cats like cheetahs or serval cats prowling in the tall grasses. The breathtaking landscapes, from the dramatic peaks of Kilimanjaro to the expansive plains of the Serengeti, offer endless opportunities

Getting a Tourist Visa for Tanzania

About Tanzania Tanzania is a stunning destination known for its rich wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant cultures. To explore this beautiful country, most foreign nationals require a visa to enter. Previously, tourists had two main options for obtaining a tourist visa: getting a visa upon arrival or applying in advance through their nation’s Tanzanian consulate. The latter option often required mailing your passport and waiting for its return—an inconvenient and risky process given the potential for lost mail. Fortunately, this process has become significantly easier. Tourists can now apply for an Electronic Visa (E-Visa) to enter Tanzania as tourists. Don’t let the visa process deter you; it’s a straightforward step required by nearly every country worldwide for travelers. Visa Costs The cost of a Tanzanian tourist visa is $50 USD for most travelers, while American citizens must pay $100 USD. Citizens of some neighboring African countries are allowed to enter Tanzania without a visa. To check if your country is exempt from needing a tourist visa, please consult Tanzania’s official visa exemption list here. Applying for Your Visa Online For convenience and peace of mind, we highly recommend applying for a tourist visa in advance through the Tanzania Immigration website. Important Note for U.S. Citizens: When completing your application, select “Multiple Entry Visa”. This option is required for U.S. citizens traveling to Tanzania for tourism. Then, choose “Holiday and Leisure” as the purpose of your trip. Other nationals should consider whether a single-entry or multiple-entry visa best suits their travel plans. Application Timeframe Processing your visa application may take up to 10 days, so ensure you allocate sufficient time to complete your application and receive your visa. If you have a last-minute adventure booked, you can opt to obtain your visa upon arrival at the airport. Timing Alert: Do not complete the tourist visa application more than three months before your planned travel dates to ensure it’s valid when you arrive. Be sure to print all confirmation pages and keep them in a secure location. Upon arrival in Tanzania—usually at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Julius Nyerere International Airport—you will receive an official sticker in your passport as proof of your tourist visa. Completing the Online Application Form Only fill out the E-Visa form from the official Tanzania Immigration website. Avoid sharing your passport number or other sensitive information with any other site offering visa services. The only authentic E-Visa is available here. To start your E-Visa: When you return, select “Continue Application.” Travel Information Tips This section often raises questions. You’ll need to provide a physical address in Tanzania and the name of your host. Travel Companions Tips Visa on Arrival vs. E-Visa If you find the E-Visa process complicated or face technical issues, don’t worry! You can still obtain a visa on arrival in Tanzania for the same cost, provided you are from a country that does not require a referred visa (more details below). Nationals from many countries can receive a visa on arrival. The advantage of completing the E-Visa process is the time you save upon arrival. E-Visa holders can queue in the “Visa Holder” line at immigration, allowing for a quicker passage through without further paperwork or payment. In contrast, those obtaining a visa on arrival face a lengthier process, including paperwork and determining the purpose of their visit. This often results in longer wait times, especially during peak arrival times. If you opt for a visa upon arrival, ensure you have $50 USD ready in cash (U.S. citizens must have $100 USD). It’s wise to have your tour operator’s contact details and the name of your hotel handy for immigration. Referral Visa Citizens from certain countries may require a referred visa to enter Tanzania, even as tourists. This application process is more complex and cannot be completed upon arrival. Nationals from the following countries must apply in advance for a referred visa: If you’re a citizen of one of these listed countries, it’s crucial to apply for a referral visa well in advance, as processing can take over 60 days. Tanzania Immigration advises against booking flights until your referral visa has been approved. Royal Climb and Safaris is here to assist clients with their referral visa applications, drawing on our extensive experience to help ensure a smooth travel process. Passport Validity Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure from Tanzania. For instance, if your passport expires in November 2024, your departure should be no later than May 2024. If your passport is nearing its expiration date, consider renewing it before completing your E-Visa application, as your passport number may change and render your visa invalid. Further Assistance If you have any questions regarding the tourist visa process for Tanzania, don’t hesitate to contact Royal Climb and Safaris. We’re committed to ensuring you have a seamless and enjoyable experience in our beautiful country.

Oldoinyo Lengai

Exploring Oldoinyo Lengai and Lake Natron: The Sacred Mountain and the Alkaline Wonder OverviewTanzania is a land of incredible landscapes, and none is more unique than the towering Oldoinyo Lengai and the mysterious Lake Natron. Located in the northern part of Tanzania’s Rift Valley, these natural wonders offer breathtaking views, adventure-filled activities, and a deep connection to Maasai culture and history. Oldoinyo Lengai, often referred to as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai, is an active volcano with a truly unique composition, while Lake Natron is famed for its stunning, stark beauty and high alkalinity that supports rare ecosystems. This blog will delve into the significance of Oldoinyo Lengai, the activities to enjoy around Lake Natron, and why these destinations are must-visit spots for adventurers, hikers, and nature lovers alike. Oldoinyo Lengai: The “Mountain of God” OverviewOldoinyo Lengai, which means “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is a sacred mountain and active volcano. Standing at about 2,962 meters (9,718 feet), it is located in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, near the Kenya-Tanzania border. What makes Oldoinyo Lengai so special is its unique carbonatite lava—an unusual type of lava that is much cooler and flows faster than typical lava, creating surreal, almost alien landscapes. The mountain is also considered holy by the Maasai people, who believe it to be the earthly home of their god Engai. Why Is It Called “Oldoinyo Lengai”? The name Oldoinyo Lengai comes from the Maasai language, where “Oldoinyo” means “mountain” and “Lengai” refers to “God.” According to Maasai beliefs, the mountain is the home of Engai, a god associated with fertility, rain, and life. The periodic volcanic eruptions are considered manifestations of the deity’s power, and the mountain holds deep spiritual significance for the Maasai people, who live in the surrounding regions. The Maasai also believe that Engai provides them with blessings through the mountain, such as water, good health, and fertile grazing lands for their cattle. Climbing Oldoinyo Lengai Oldoinyo Lengai is one of the most unique volcanoes to climb, offering a challenging and exhilarating trek up steep slopes that reward hikers with unforgettable views of the surrounding landscapes. The climb to the summit is steep and physically demanding, often beginning late at night to allow climbers to reach the peak by sunrise. Best Time to Climb Safety Considerations Oldoinyo Lengai is an active volcano, with eruptions occurring periodically. It is important to consult local guides and authorities about volcanic activity before attempting a climb. Due to the steep terrain and loose volcanic material, climbing requires a high level of fitness and caution. Lake Natron: The Alkaline Wonder OverviewJust east of Oldoinyo Lengai lies Lake Natron, a shallow, saline lake known for its otherworldly beauty. The lake is extremely alkaline, with a pH level between 9 and 10.5, making it inhospitable to most life forms. However, Lake Natron is one of the most important breeding grounds for lesser flamingos, which flock to its shores in the thousands, creating a stunning spectacle of pink against the blue waters. Unique Features of Lake Natron Activities at Lake Natron Best Time to Visit Lake Natron How to Get There Where to Stay Conclusion For adventure seekers, nature lovers, and those looking for a spiritual connection with the land, Oldoinyo Lengai and Lake Natron are must-visit destinations in Tanzania. Whether you’re scaling the steep slopes of the Mountain of God, watching flamingos thrive in the harsh waters of Lake Natron, or soaking in the serenity of the Ngare Sero waterfalls, this region offers an unforgettable experience of Tanzania’s untamed beauty. Royal Climb and Safaris offers customized tours to Oldoinyo Lengai and Lake Natron, ensuring a seamless and enriching adventure.
